Trading Scrubs for a Second Chance

Nursing journeys don’t always move in straight lines.

Some begin right after graduation.
Some take detours.
Some pause altogether.
And some begin again when life forces a reroute.

Often, that’s where second chances are born.

My Rise & Thrive Tribe,

Pull up a chair (or that rolling stool you borrowed from the supply room). Today we’re talking about second chances — not the dramatic, movie-montage kind, but the quiet ones that show up disguised as reroutes.

Because sometimes, we don’t just start this career once.
Sometimes, life taps us on the shoulder and says, “Time to slow down… or start again… or try something different.”

🌱 My Unexpected Detour

A few years ago, illness forced me to slow down. Full honesty — I had to step away from bedside nursing for almost a year to heal my body.

At first, I was frustrated. Bedside work had been my rhythm, my adrenaline fix, my comfort zone. Stepping away felt like someone had pulled the plug on a version of myself I wasn’t ready to let go of.

But the pause changed me.

I moved into a different department, learned new skills, and saw nursing from a whole new angle. When I eventually returned to the bedside, I came back with a renewed appreciation for it — not because everything was easier, but because I saw the work differently.

What felt like a setback became a reset.

💼 Patricia’s Midlife Pivot

Then there’s my friend Patricia.

She had built a career in marketing, was raising young children, and navigating life after a divorce. When she was laid off, she could have taken the familiar path — another office job, another restart.

Instead, she chose nursing school. In her 40s.

Fast forward to today, and Patricia is the nurse you want beside you when things get complicated. She’ll tell you herself — it’s not just what she learned in school that makes her strong. It’s the life she lived before scrubs ever entered the picture.

Sometimes, perspective is the most valuable credential we bring.

💬 From Each One Teach One

“Sometimes the strongest nurses aren’t the ones who never left — they’re the ones who found their way back… or found their way here for the first time.”

Second chances don’t erase hard seasons.
They give them meaning.

Whether you’re returning after a break, starting nursing later than planned, or simply finding your footing again — you’re not behind. You’re bringing something this profession needs.

🧠 Selah Reflection

Before you move on with your day, take a quiet moment and ask yourself:

Where in my nursing journey have I been given a second chance — and how might I be invited to step into it now?

You don’t need a perfect answer.
Sometimes noticing the question is enough.
